Staying Busy Improves Mental Health

While sharing stories with the men and boys at the football pitch, Bashir Kitaka, the Director of Operations, Communications and Programming for DEI Embrace, met 65 year old Mutekanga David, a retiree from an international NGO.

Mutekanga felt that his family no longer appreciated, valued or loved him. When I visited their home, Mutekanga’s wife said that after retirement her husband became depressed, rude, and moody because he had no steady work. I gave him some capital to set up a vegetable stall, which gave him something to do and receive him daily income. Today, the family lives harmoniously; the children no longer fear their father, and he feels useful again.

The DEI Embrace Foundation wants to change the negative perception of society towards Mental Health. In our community, a person with any mental illness is called a mad person; we want people to understand that, like any illness, mental illness is curable.
